1 Page vs. 2 Pages: Which Should You Use For Your Resume?

📃 𝐔𝐬𝐞 𝐚 𝟏-𝐏𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐮𝐦𝐞 𝐢𝐟:

You have under 7-10 years of experience: If you are an entry-level, early-career or mid-career professional, fitting your experience onto one page forces you to keep only your highest-impact achievements.

You want maximum visual punch: Hiring managers spend an average of 6 to 7 seconds on an initial skim. A tight, single page ensures they see your best highlights instantly.

📄📄 𝐔𝐬𝐞 𝐚 𝟐-𝐏𝐚𝐠𝐞 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐮𝐦𝐞 𝐢𝐟:

You have 10+ years of deep experience: Senior-level professionals, managers, and directors often need two full pages to demonstrate leadership, long-term tenure and progressive achievements.

Your background includes extensive technical projects, certifications, publications, advanced degrees, study abroad, skills or interests.

  • 🥇 𝐀𝐯𝐨𝐢𝐝 𝐚 "𝟏.𝟓-𝐏𝐚𝐠𝐞" 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐮𝐦𝐞: If your resume spills onto a second page for just a few lines or half a page, it looks unintentional. Either trim it down to 1 full page or expand your bullet points with metrics to fill 2 full pages.
  • 🥈 𝐑𝐞𝐥𝐞𝐯𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐁𝐞𝐚𝐭𝐬 𝐋𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐭𝐡: Recruiters don't reject resumes simply because they are two pages - they reject resumes that contain fluff. Keep every bullet point focused on measurable results (e.g. revenue growth, efficiency, audience reach).
  • 🥉 𝐀𝐓𝐒 𝐃𝐨𝐞𝐬𝐧'𝐭 𝐌𝐢𝐧𝐝 𝐋𝐞𝐧𝐠𝐭𝐡: Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) can parse 1-page or 2-page resumes equally well and in some cases a 2-page resume may help with keyword matches given the increased volume. However, human recruiters still prefer concise, scannable formats.

💡 𝐌𝐲 𝐫𝐮𝐥𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐮𝐦𝐛:

A great one-page resume beats a mediocre two-page resume.

But a great two-page resume will almost always outperform a one-page resume that cuts out your best accomplishments just to fit an outdated rule.

Don't optimize for page count. Optimize for clarity, relevance and results.

♻️ If you know someone updating their resume, consider sharing this post - it might save them from deleting some of their best achievements.
