Do You Actually Need An AI Agent? (And How To Create "Skills" In Claude Or ChatGPT) 🤖

Do you actually need an AI agent? Sports Entertainment Academy guide to creating Skills in Claude or ChatGPT

The hype around AI agents is hard to miss:

  • The global AI agents market is projected to surge from $5.1 billion in 2024 to $47.1 billion by 2030 (a 44.8% CAGR). (Source: MarketsandMarkets)
  • 82% of companies plan to integrate AI agents within the next 1 to 3 years. (Source: Capgemini Research Institute)

Before you try to create a complex web of autonomous agents, there is a much simpler, more cost-effective step you should take first. Building on our previous post about creating a Master Core Vault ("Second Brain"), the next move is developing dedicated "Skills" - focused instruction files (ideally 300 to 500 lines max) designed to execute recurring tasks while keeping your token usage low.

How to Build Your First AI "Skills"

You don't need to guess which workflows to systematize first. Once your Master Core Vault is uploaded, simply ask your AI:

"Based on the information I’ve provided in my Master Core Vault .md file, what separate Skills would you recommend we create?"

Depending on your goals, you can build dedicated Skills for:

  • Sponsorship prospecting workflows
  • Job search and application scoring
  • Investing and personal finances
  • Travel planning and logistics

"My personal AI recommended six separate Skills," says Taylor Beggs. "For each one, I provided as much context as possible - screenshots of my investment portfolio, average monthly credit card expenses, my resume, cover letter examples and specific job-scoring criteria."

A Quick Note on Privacy:

"It’s entirely up to you what personal information you’re comfortable sharing," Beggs adds. "That’s why I created my own personal privacy policy inside my Master Core Vault, along with a shortened version inside each relevant Skill. (If you want the exact wording, I’ve added the full template to the Sports Entertainment Accelerator)."

Best Practices for Managing Your Skills

Once your Skills are built, pin them to your sidebar or workspace. Whenever you need help with a specific workflow, activate that dedicated Skill so your AI pulls only the relevant context - keeping responses sharp and minimizing token usage.

Pro Tip: Don't Cross-Link Your Skills

Should one Skill point to another? No. Your AI already sees the name and one-line description of every Skill in your workspace. Adding a pointer like "see taylor-investments" adds zero value. Worse, it can trigger your AI to open an entire secondary Skill file just to look up a single number, burning unnecessary tokens. Keep each Skill self-contained.

Using ChatGPT? Depending on your plan and available features, you can build similar workflows using Custom GPTs or Skills, organize your Master Core Vault and reference materials in a Project, and automate recurring work with scheduled tasks where available.

Do You Actually Need a Team of AI Agents?

Scroll through social media and you’ll see self-proclaimed "AI experts" bragging about their 34-agent AI teams, claiming they run with zero extra token costs.

The actual data tells a very different story.

Research from Anthropic shows that a single AI agent uses roughly 4x the tokens of a standard chat, while a multi-agent system uses about 15x. Multi-agent teams only pay off on massive, complex research projects that can be split into parallel workloads. For day-to-day workflows - including ours - a full agent team is overkill.

When we asked Claude directly if we needed to build AI agents, here is what it told us:

"What you already have is the right setup: one Claude, your Master Core Vault, a few focused Skills, and possibly one Scheduled Task. For example, every Monday, Claude could research the week’s top sports and entertainment jobs and draft your roundup, ready for you to edit. Want me to set that up?"

The Real Unlock: Scheduled Tasks

That final suggestion from Claude highlights the real game-changer for daily productivity: Scheduled Tasks.

Because we fed our AI clear context about our business and goals from day one, it proactively identified a bottleneck we hadn't even thought to automate: our Monday Job Roundup.

Curating and formatting that roundup used to take us several hours every single week - a task we assumed had to be done manually. Today, a polished draft is delivered straight to our inbox every Monday at 1:00PM ET, ready to review and post.
